DREYThe Conquered
The Conquered is the shadow of the victorious, embodying the Hanged Man in Tarot − a figure who yields, forced to accept defeat and, in doing so, glimpses life from a new perspective. Like defeated heroes in myth, the Conquered finds wisdom in surrender, embodying the Buddha's insight that attachment to control breeds suffering. Through loss, they encounter a unique form of freedom, as the chains of desire and power are released. Their journey reminds us that life's value does not always lie in triumph but in grace, resilience, and the ability to find peace even in failure. The remains of the Conquered suffer the ultimate humiliation, the severed heads of the vanquished left on spikes outside of British city walls in medieval times; the trophy scalps of ancient tribes; the heads of Aztec enemies displayed as trophies; and the shrunken heads of the Jivaroan peoples of the northwestern region of the Amazon rainforest; all attest to the ignominy of death, where even the skull can be robbed of dignity and respect.
