ANAKINThe Vessel

The Vessel is both form and void, a container for existence yet fundamentally defined by its emptiness. Like the human skull, it is a paradox: a symbol of life's housing and its inevitable decay. Within the cosmogeny of the Tarot, The Vessel echoes The High Priestess − keeper of mysteries, holding the sacred within its silent interior; yet more importantly the card Temperance, the fine fluid of the spirit being carefully decanted from one vessel to another, one life to the next. Mythology abounds with vessels of transformation: Pandora's box, the Holy Grail, each holding power to create or destroy. Philosophy ponders the Vessel as a metaphor for self, where identity is shaped by what it holds − or lacks. In Buddhism, it embodies śūnyatā, the void that is fullness, urging us to acknowledge the finite – and the infinite. Folklore frames it as both protector and bearer of destiny, while science sees it as the body, fleetingly housing consciousness, and more profoundly, the universe, containing everything. The Vessel can be a receptacle for higher forces, channelling positive energy into the world, but it can also be vulnerable to darker forces, and in extreme cases become possessed by those malevolent energies. Ultimately, The Vessel reminds us that life, death, and afterlife are processes of filling and emptying, transient yet profound in their culmination.
